Daimler Truck, Volvo Group wrap up deal to form fuel-cell joint venture

Two of the largest Truck manufacturers in the world have announced a new partnership to develop future green technology for the commercial truck market. Daimler Truck and the Volvo Group have joined a fuel-cell joint venture.

This is based around the Volvo Group acquiring a 50% stake in the already established Daimler Truck Fuel Cell company for a 600-million-euro investment.

The goal of the venture is to create a new world leader in the manufacture of fuel cells with a goal of moving towards climate-neutral and sustainable transportation by the year 2050. They will develop, produce and commercialise fuel-cell systems for use in heavy-duty trucks as its focus as well as filtering this technology down into other applications. This new company will be renamed to cellcentric.

One of the main goals for cellcentric is to get to the point where they can start customer testing of trucks with fuel cells in approximately 3 years and to follow this up with full series production in the second half of this decade.

While Daimler Truck and the Volvo Group are partners in this endeavour, they say they will continue to be competitors in all other areas in the industry.
